How to Install an ArcticFX Snowmobile Wrap: The Complete Guide

Updated:

You just ordered your ArcticFX wrap. The tracking number is in your inbox. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a small voice is asking: “can I actually do this myself?”

Yes. You can.

Installing a snowmobile wrap is one of those things that sounds more intimidating than it is. With the right prep, the right temperature, and a little patience, most riders get it done in an afternoon and wonder why they were ever nervous about it. This guide walks you through every step, from the moment your kit arrives to the moment you step back and take that first photo.

Why ArcticFX Wraps Are Built for DIY Install

Before we get into the how-to, it helps to understand what makes ArcticFX wraps different from other graphics on the market.

Every ArcticFX kit is made with Air-Pass Technology, an industry first. Small air channels are etched directly into the adhesive side of the material, which means air bubbles have somewhere to go as you apply each piece. No liquid needed, no trapped bubbles, no frustrating do-overs. The material does a lot of the work for you.

Your kit also ships with a complimentary application kit that includes everything you need to get the job done: a 6" felt squeegee, a 4" hard squeegee, a Lil Chizzler for removing old graphics, and AFX Adhesive Remover. Unlike some wrap kits on the market that charge separately for installation tools, everything you need ships with your ArcticFX order at no extra cost.

What You Will Need

Here is the full tool list before you get started:

Included with your order:

- 6" felt squeegee

- 4" hard squeegee

- Lil Chizzler (graphic removal tool)

- AFX Adhesive Remover

- Application instruction sheet

You will need to supply:

- 70% to 90% isopropyl alcohol

- Dye-free, lint-free paper towels

- Small utility blade (snap-off style recommended)

- Heat gun or hair dryer

- Application key: scan the QR code on top of your kit bag, or find yours on our installation guides page

One thing to note before you start: do not use any oil-based products to clean your machine. WD-40, Pledge, and similar products leave a film behind that will interfere with adhesion. Stick with isopropyl alcohol and you will be fine.

Step 1: Let Your Kit Breathe

When your kit arrives, unroll it and let it lay flat for at least one hour before you touch anything else. This gives the material time to relax and makes handling significantly easier.

Use this time well. Inspect every piece in good light and compare it against your order. Then go prep your machine while you wait. It’s the most important part of the whole process.

Step 2: Prep Your Machine (Do Not Skip This)

Surface prep is where most installation problems start. A clean surface is non-negotiable. Any dirt, grime, oil, or residue left behind will compromise adhesion, and there are no shortcuts here.

Remove existing graphics first. If your sled has factory graphics or an old wrap, use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm them up until they are warm to the touch, then peel slowly at a 90-degree angle. Factory graphics are thinner and more fragile than ArcticFX material, so take your time. Once they are off, use the AFX Adhesive Remover to clear any leftover adhesive residue.

Clean every surface with isopropyl alcohol. Apply it to all areas where graphics will go and wipe thoroughly with your lint-free paper towels. No streaks, no residue, no missed spots.

New sled? Read this before you install. Some dealerships apply a protective coating to new sleds. Maxima SC1 is a common one. If your sled came straight from a dealer, test adhesion before you commit to a full install. Cut a 2" x 10" strip of white vinyl from the end of your graphics roll and stick it to a few smooth plastic surfaces including the tunnel. If it peels off easily, you likely have a coating. Remove it with a heavy-duty degreaser like Zep Industrial Purple Cleaner, Krud Kutter Original, or Dawn Professional Heavy-Duty Degreaser, then retest before proceeding.

Step 3: Check Your Temperature

This one matters more than most people expect.

Install your wrap at room temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Too cold and the adhesive will not activate properly. Too warm and the material can stretch and shift before you want it to.

If you are working in a heated shop or garage that sits in this range, you are good to go. If your workspace runs colder (which is common for anyone installing in a garage during early or late season), read the cold garage section at the end of this post before you start.

Step 4: Wash Your Hands

Seriously. Oils and residue from your hands transfer directly to the adhesive side of the graphics and cause adhesion problems. Wash thoroughly before handling any piece from your kit.

Step 5: Apply Your Graphics

This is where it comes together. Work on one piece at a time and start with the larger pieces first.

Position before you commit. Lift a piece from the backing and hold it above the surface without touching it down. Get it as close to the correct position as you can before making contact. Your application key (found via the QR code on your kit bag or on our installation guides page) shows exactly where each piece goes for your specific sled model.

Lightly tack two corners first. Touch down one corner lightly, then rotate the opposite corner into position and tack that down too. If the placement looks right, press your finger or thumb through the center of the piece to create a hinge point. If it does not look right, lift it and reposition. The material is forgiving at this stage.

Squeegee from the center out. Lift one half of the graphic back toward the center hinge. Starting at the hinge, use firm up-and-down strokes with your squeegee to work that half down onto the surface. Then lift the other half and repeat. Work slowly and methodically rather than rushing across the piece.

Leave small gaps between pieces. Do not apply pieces edge to edge. Most pieces require a small gap between them to sit correctly on the contours of your sled. Your application key will show you the right spacing.

Repeat for every piece. Work through the entire kit one piece at a time.

Step 6: Heat, Trim, and Finish

Once all pieces are applied, go over the entire kit with your heat gun. This helps the material conform to curved surfaces and locks the adhesive in place.

Use your utility blade to trim any excess or overhanging edges. Pay special attention to your reflectors. Trim around them carefully and never cover them. This is both a safety requirement and, in most places, a legal one.

Step 7: Let It Cure

Set the sled aside for at least 6 hours before moving it. 24 hours is better. The adhesive needs time to fully bond to the surface, and any flexing or handling during this window can compromise the result.

If you have areas that are giving you trouble with adhesion (Ski-Doo gas tanks are a common one), 3M Primer-94 is available on Amazon and works well as an added insurance layer before applying graphics to those spots.

Sometimes it helps to see it done. The ArcticFX install video on YouTube walks through the entire process on a real sled and is worth watching before your first install, or any time you want a refresher.

Not a DIY Person? We Have You Covered

ArcticFX wraps are designed to be installed at home by anyone, but we understand that not everyone wants to do it themselves. Because our wraps are pre-cut specifically for powersports applications, they are different from typical automotive wraps. Not every installer has experience with them, and the last thing you want is someone treating your new graphics like a car door panel.

That is why we put together a vetted list of ArcticFX-approved installers across the US and Canada. These are professionals who know our product, understand how our pre-cut kits work, and can get the job done right.

It is also worth noting that Polaris recognizes ArcticFX wraps in their official owner resources, which speaks to how well our product is suited to the machines their riders love.

Common Questions Before You Start

Can I install over my factory graphics?

We do not recommend installing ArcticFX wraps over existing factory or OEM graphics.  While our graphics are some of the thickest on the planet, they will still show a slight outline of any graphics under the surface.  In most cases our aggressive adhesive will take the factory graphic with it if/when it is removed anyway.  Bottom line, if you don't think you’ll like the embossed factory graphic look under your new wrap then we recommend removing them completely and cleaning the surface before installing.

Do I need to remove the hood or panels before wrapping?

In most cases, no. ArcticFX wraps are precision-cut to fit your sled's OEM panels in place, so full disassembly is not required for a standard install. That said, removing certain panels can make it easier to get clean edges and reach tight spots, especially around the hood and tunnel. If you are installing for the first time and want the cleanest possible result, popping off a panel or two where access is tight is worth the extra few minutes.

Will the wrap leave adhesive residue on my plastics if I remove it later?

When removed correctly, ArcticFX wraps leave minimal to no residue on OEM plastics. The key is using heat. Warm the graphic with a heat gun or hair dryer before peeling to soften the adhesive, then pull slowly at a low angle rather than ripping it off quickly. If any residue does remain, the included AFX Adhesive Remover takes care of it cleanly. Plastics that have been sitting in extreme cold for extended periods may require a little more heat and patience, but the process is the same.

What if I have aftermarket plastics?

Our templates are built to fit OEM factory plastics precisely. If your sled has aftermarket or modified plastics, contact us at (586) 786-9851 or mention it in the notes section at checkout before ordering. We want to make sure we can accommodate your setup.

Will my plastic color show through?

ArcticFX graphics are cut into multiple pieces rather than a single sheet, so small gaps between pieces are normal and the color of your plastics will be slightly visible. This is worth factoring into your design choice. Incorporating your plastic color into the design rather than fighting against it tends to look best.

What if a piece gets damaged later?

ArcticFX offers a lifetime warranty with discounted replacement graphics for the original wrap owner. Order replacements through the Shop tab on the website and provide as much detail about your original order as possible.

Installing in a Cold Garage

If your workspace runs below 60 degrees, you have a few options.

The simplest is to bring your sled inside somewhere warmer for the install. Even a few hours in a heated space makes a significant difference. If that is not possible, a space heater directed at the work area can bring the surface temperature of the plastics up enough to get proper adhesion.

You can also use your heat gun more aggressively during the application process to warm both the material and the surface as you go. Apply heat to the graphic piece just before you squeegee it down, and to the plastic surface immediately before the material makes contact. Work in smaller sections than you would at room temperature.

The material and adhesive will still work in cooler conditions, but adhesion will be slower to develop and the material will be slightly less flexible. In cold installs, the 24-hour cure window is not optional. Give it the full time before you move or flex the sled.

One thing that will not work: trying to rush a cold install by cranking the heat gun on already-applied pieces. Too much direct heat after application can cause the material to lift or bubble at the edges. Warm before you apply, not after.

If you are regularly installing in cold conditions and want to talk through your specific setup, give us a call at (586) 786-9851. We have seen all kinds of garage situations and can usually point you in the right direction.
